The Dish

with Shlomo Hamelech

So the time has finally come to speak about a topic that we all love (or hate) to participate in and talk about soooooo much. SIMCHAS!  Yes that's right, parties.  At one time in our lives we have all been to a party or have hosted a party and we all know the amount of time, energy, money, thought and money that goes into one of these things.  Whether it is a Bar/Bat Mitzvah, a Sweet 16, and Engagement or Wedding, I think we can all attest to the fact that besides these parties being fun .... or a drag (depends who it is), the simchas nowadays have gone  WAY TOO FAR! Since when does a Bat Mitzvah need an army of dancers to walk in the Bat Mitzvah Girl to Cindy Laupers 'Girls Just Wanna Have Fun' or 15 flat screen HD TV's mounted around the room with a rotating slide-show of the Bar Mitzvah boy and all of his prepubescent friends on their school trip to Ottawa. In my days i got a loot bag or a t-shirt with some cheesy line of how "i partied my b*** off at Jons Bar"...... now they give away IPODS AND TV'S.  Heck, I'd love to be invited to one of those!  My favourite has to be the entrance of a bride and groom on a CAMEL!!!!????  Like come on already!  What happened to the simple yet humorous speech on this weeks Torah portion??? Or the cute and not so well choreographed entrance dance from the bride and groom???  I just feel that all of the simchas I go to are made to be such a spectacle and over-the-top production that really we are just losing the essence and beauty of these once meaningful, uncomplicated and down-to-earth events in our life.  I am one to believe that what makes a party is good friends, good music, and good eats.  But really what it all comes down to is the energy that the hosts give off.  In something we call in my circle, heba. Heba = that warm and joyous feeling you get when your surrounded by positivity and love.  It's happy energy felt right down deep into the soul.  That's what it was meant to be about, and that's what it should be about.  Let's not forget that.

And well, tha'ts just me dishing it out on .... SIMCHAS.
